Many of the businesses are only providing services locally, and more people are searching for local businesses from cell phones using satellite. This means that if you are one of the local businesses you will need to appear in local search results.
First and foremost you need to treat organic search differently than local search. People trust maps more than other information online. We learned in an early age that Maps are accurate and we trust them.
If your business exists for a while most likely you are already added to Google Map since they are taking data from other relevant directories. You have to make sure that your information is correct. If you find that your information is not accurate you will have to find the source and edit it.
Here are some directories where the information could come from:
If you are not yet present online you will have to add yourself to local directories like the ones I mentioned above, and don’t forget others like Yahoo Directory, Yelp, Insiders Pages, Judy’s Book, Citysearch, and Trip Advisor.
Besides these, you will have to find highly relevant directories to your industry. If you are for example a restaurant, you will need to list yourself in Urbanspoon. If you are a school, you need to find your local school directories and add your school.
I do not suggest listing your business in other non-relevant directories. Use the one trusted ones from above and add your business to one or two industry relevant ones.
When you are thinking of local SEO, these are the things you need to consider:
1) accessibility and content: make sure that your address and map are on your contact page so people on cell phones will have easy access to your location.
2) target local keywords like “restaurants Miami” or ” locksmith Santa Monica”.
3) Have your inbound links titled with your local keywords.
4) title your pictures with local keywords.
